The 5 Best 40x60 Tent Layouts for Any Event

40x60 pole tent

The ever popular 40x60 tent is perfect for your medium sized events. With a whopping 2,400 square feet of usable space, a tent this size is great for weddings, banquets, cocktail hours, corporate events, and anything else you can imagine.

Planning your event layout early can help you avoid unnecessary headaches the day of your celebration. Stay prepared and worry free by doing all the hard work now rather than later!

When you’re planning your 40x60 tent layout, it’s important to take into account the tent style you’re working with. Frame tents and pole tents are some of the most popular tent styles for larger events, and they have different requirements when it comes to planning your layout.

Tent Style Considerations & How They Affect Your Event Layout

Different tent styles impact the types of layouts that work best for your events. Here are the main differences between a frame tent and a pole tent:

  • Frame tents are great for long term use and can be used on a variety of surfaces. A frame tent is held up by the outside frame, which means the interior is completely open to accommodate a number of layouts!

  • Pole Tents are best used for short term use on grass or stake-able surfaces! A pole tent is held up with tension between the center poles and the outside poles, meaning the layouts are a bit limited in comparison to a frame tent.

Seating Capacity Overview for a 40x60 Tent

The 40x60 event tent is excellent for your midsized wedding or celebration, accommodating between 200-343 people depending on your seating arrangements.

These numbers are based on a full tent layout. Meaning, if your event has extra elements, you’ll have to plan for that unusable space

  • Aisles for walkways are typically 5’ wide

  • Dance floors are usually about 4-5 square feet per dancer, with about 30-50% of guests dancing at once

  • Having a bar under the tent will reduce seating space

  • For weddings: a head table, gift table, and other areas will also limit the number of seats available

Using a capacity chart such as this one would allow you to pre-plan the number of people who can fit with the layout that works best for your event!

Ceremony Layout

For a ceremony style event, the most common seating arrangement is using straight rows of chairs with a 5’ center aisle. This allows you to fit the most amount of people in one space to watch a wedding ceremony or presentation

It’s recommended to space chair rows about 24–36 inches apart from back to back. This gives guests enough room to sit comfortably and move in and out without disrupting the entire row.

If you’re planning a wedding, make sure to take into consideration elements such as altars, arches, staging, and other decorations you might be using. This can take seats away from your guests, so make sure you plan accordingly!

American Tent’s Advice: You can also add sidewalls or a smaller tent to stage a bridal party without the audience seeing them or using tent space!

Cocktail Layout

Cocktail hours are often a standing occasion, with high tables where people can mix and mingle around. There’s a bit more space around each table for people to walk between without feeling squished.

Lounge furniture and bars are sporadically spaced around the area so people can sit and relax if they want, or gather around the bar to talk while they get a drink. Cocktail hours or events are generally more relaxed and can be set up in many different ways to accommodate your personal style or the needs of the event!

During a cocktail hour, many people are standing and walking about, so not everyone will need a seat at one time!

Banquet Table Layout

Banquet table style seating is a reliable option for wedding receptions, graduation parties, family reunions, or other events where people will be eating. With long rectangular tables, many people can fit at one table–great for catching up!

With the amount of tables you have, they are an efficient way to keep large numbers of people in one area. Banquet tables are an easy way to seat everyone at your party with minimal logistics required, making setup and tear down easier.

Don’t forget: You may need extra room for a buffet, head table, bar, or dance floor. (A dance floor can be covered with tables during a reception dinner, and uncovered when you’re ready to dance!)

Round Table Dinner

If you're looking for a more intimate and aesthetic reception, round tables might be more your style. With round tables, you’ll fit fewer guests, but you’ll have a more elegant setup. This is an incredibly popular option with wedding receptions so people can easily talk with friends and family.

Round tables require more spacing so guests can easily move from their seats and in between tables. Because of the walking space, less seating is available in comparison to banquet tables. For your reception, account for buffet tables, head tables, bars, and other elements that may also reduce seating.

Multi-Function Layout

One tent can do it all! Split the tent for multi-use: ceremony and cocktail hour, ceremony and dinner, cocktail and dance floor… the options are endless!

To separate your spaces during setups, use curtains or dividers to keep your party on one side of the tent until the other side is ready. The party never stops, just a short transition!

Keeping your event all in one tent will keep your budget low, setup efficient, and your guests comfortable.
