In this article, American Tent’s very own Tent Guru-Pete McVey, who has always had a passion for creating beautiful, easy to use tents for events, gives you a quick and effective explanation of pole pads.
A pole pad, which is often referred to as a mud block or as a plywood square, is a piece of plywood, typically measuring approximately 6”x 6” or 8”x 8”. What is it used for? It disperses the load of the side pole across the ground that it's sitting on so that it can't sink.
Normally, when the ground gets wet, it will sink into the ground and release the tension of the tent, causing the tent to fail. However, with a simple piece of plywood, easily laid on the ground for the pole to sit atop, the weight is dispersed over the ground and the pole doesn’t sink into the ground.
